This a deconstruction of Jay Z's latest album The Blueprint 3. Jay Z was born on December 4 1969 in New York and is a very successful rapper and businessman. He is one of the most financially successful hip hop artists and entrapreneurs in America. He co owns The 40/40 club, is a part owner of the NBA'S New Jearsy Nets, and is also the creator of the clothing line Rocawear. Also he is the former CEO of def jam recordings, one of the three founders of Roc-a-Fella Records and the founder of Roc Nation. He has also collaborated with a long list of fellow urban artists such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Eminem, Drake, Mr Hudson and Kanye West. The Blueprint 3 is Jay Z's eleventh studio album released September 8th 2009. It is the final installment in The Blueprint trilogy preceded by The Blueprint (2001), The Blueprint 2: The Gift and the Curse (2002). The album cover shown above will most likely be featured in urban magazine's, newspapers, on the internet and on billboards in order to advertise and promote it particularly leading up to its release. Also the album cover is white and doesn't include an image of Jay Z. This is probably because Jay Z is now an estabilished artist and doesn't need to feature himself on the album cover as it is an highly anticipated comeback album and all of his hardcore fans will probably buy it. It also features a pile of musical instruments this could suggest that the album is very musical, and although Jay Z is a rapper and makes hip hop music, it could feature a diverse range of music as Jay Z has worked with artists that are not associated with his genre in the past such as Linkin Park and U2. There is also three red stripes on the cover this could symbolise the fact this is the third and final Blueprint album. It could also be connected to Roc Nation as that logo is red and its released on Roc Nation which is Jay Z's record label.

3.32 In the last scene Rihanna is seen with a load of bouncy balls around her and she's holding one in the air with a multi coloured background. Then two eyes can be seen blinking at the screen which could be perceived as a bit creepy.


2.59 As Rihanna is seen performing the chorus and dancing wearing sunglasses, a large amount of jewellery and a hat, a moving multi coloured background comes up behind her and hypnotises the audience.


3.04 In a later shot Rihanna is seen twice against a purple background this time with long hair dancing and playing with it. She looks similar to when she first started her singing career in this shot and she did say that she was going back to her roots with this video including a carribean/Jamaican feel to it. Rihanna was very different when she first started as her music was described as reggae/danchall/carribean beats mixed with R&B now her musical style has changed to R&B mixed with pop.


1.56 When the lyrics 'boom boom boom' are sang Rihanna can be seen dancing in a provocative way against a bright yellow background with the words coming accross the screen in a pink font. This maybe because it's a catchy tune and she wants it to be a big hit for her fans to sing along to.


1.50 Rihanna's mouth is then seen again this time in all four corners of the screen similar to the drum scene. She is seen miming along to the lyrics often putting one side of her lip up showing that she has attitude which is a side to Rihanna that is often seen through her music and her videos. Also her lips are multi coloured which fit in with the concept of the video


1.32 Later on a similar scene is shown however with Rihanna's lips miming along and emphasising the lyrics. Then Rihanna is seen at either side dancing this is obviously special effects created with the camera. The whole video was filmed in a green screen studio in LA as Rihanna confirmed in an interview. She also said she wanted to film the video outdoors in her home country of Barbados however she said they didn't have time as the video had to be shot and she said it was strange filming it in that type of studio as she'd never done it before.


0.44 A bit later on when the song starts to reach the chorus Rihanna is seen dancing with large old fashioned cassettes turning with a multi coloured background. This maybe because in parts this video has an old fashioned theme to it as cassettes arent used nowadays.


0.08 After that Rihanna is seen against a yellow background in four corners of the screen playing the drums this may be to emphasise the use of instruments. There are pictures and videos that have surfaced on the internet of Travis Barker teaching Rihanna how to play the drums so she's obviously made full use of that in this video.


0.02 opening shot of a close up of Rihanna's foot with a green, yellow and red background representing the safari style of the video as it features animals such as lions and zebras. This could be because Rihanna likes to be different and creative with her videos as she's stated this many times in interviews.

Lip Sync Task - Kesha Tik Tok

For the lip sync task we had to choose a track to mime to and film it in the style of a music video. We chose the song Tik Tok by Kesha and to edit the video we used final cut. This is practice for when we film our music videos next year.

Analysis of Rihanna Rated R album cover

The images on all covers of the album include Rihanna dressed in black and white looking at the audience and the colours of the covers are also black and white. This shows that the album is darker, moodier and less commercial than her other albums she even said this herself in an interview and also revealed that the album told a story of her life. On the front cover she has her hand over half of her face this could show that she is shy however one of her eyes can be seen and she's looking stern towards the audience. However all of the covers show Rihanna as a strong dominant female with an attitude and this reflects in her music on this album, as she has took it to a different sound and in a different direction to what her music normally is.

The font of the 'R' looks like its been carved in by a knife or some other type of sharp object. This creates a special effect and shows off the edginess of the album. All covers of the album are in black and white this shows that the album is less commercial and reflects the darker sound that Rihanna is trying to create.

Rihanna is usually an R&B artist however the darkness of the cover of this album shows that her genre crosses over into pop and rock and also into other sub genres such as grime and drum and base. She stated this in an interview and also said that she wanted to experiment with different types of music as this is now her fourth album. Also she said that she felt like she was at a certain stage in her career were she had to make a serious album compared to her previous three albums which were fun, upbeat, not taking herself too seriously and full of catchy pop/R&B songs. The singer also announced that the album was like a movie and a life story.

Album Covers analysis

The typical features of an album cover include the artists name and the title of the album, however this is not always the case. If an artist is more established and have already released a number of albums they don't need to include their names, the title of the album or even a photo of themselves. An example of this is Rihanna, she's now onto her fourth album into her career and she's an established artist and this album is called Rated R and is in very small letters in the bottom right hand corner of the cover and because of the dark colours it can hardly be seen also instead of putting her name she's just put an 'R' to symbolise this and she announced in an interview that this is her new logo. Eminem's the same he's been around for more than 10 years and the public can relate to him so therefore on his latest album he doesn't include his name but because its a hip hop album and contains a lot of strong language it has the warning 'parental advisory explicit content'. With the Black Eyed Peas' latest album it doesn't contain a picture of them on the front cover however all of their other albums have, this album has a futuristic vibe to it and contains a robot on the front cover and the Black Eyed Peas announced in an interview that that image was all of their faces put together. Many artists who are releasing debut albums for the first time need to include their name the album name and an image of themselves in order to get the public used to them. An example of this is Lady gaga, The Fame Monster is her debut album, however this has now sold millions of copies worldwide and Lady gaga has become a global superstar in just over a year so for her next album she probably won't have to include the typical features of an album cover. Michael Jackson's Thriller is the biggest selling album of all time and in 2008 it got a re release for its 25th anniversary to include a DVD with all his videos on, remixes of some of his tracks, collaborations with Will.i.am, Kanye West, Akon and Fergie and a couple of new tracks. The album cover is very similar to the original but with gold bits on and better graphics and photography which would have improved over the years since it was released. It also includes two golden discs a special edition book that features pictures behind the scenes of the making of the Thriller video.
